The Oregon Queen — February 2022

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022 Avalon Irwin!

This month brought many new adventures as well as a few new dad jokes. This month I got to visit the Northwest Ag Show held in Salem. While I was there I got to learn more about Knipe Land Company and their magazine The Range Writer. I am honored to get to be on the cover this month. Knipe has been graciously putting the Northwest State Queens on the covers of their magazines for 12 years. We appreciate them helping to promote us in the agricultural world.

After the Ag Show, I caught a plane to Denver where I got to compete in the Cowboy Downhill, pack flags at the National Western Stock Show, and meet athletes and students alike while helping out at the Remarkable Rodeo. During my stay in Denver, I had a host family that was gracious enough to take me sightseeing. Unfortunately, we got too caught up in the adventure which resulted in me missing my flight! So instead of spending the night at home, I got to spend another night with them where they introduced me to all the dad jokes I could possibly ever want to hear. For more behind the scenes information on the Stock Show, check out our video on Facebook or TikTok!

In between trips I am busy working on plans for my coronation in March. Tickets for the event are on sale now. You can purchase them by reaching out through Facebook, email, or purchase them on everbrite (this adds a small fee.) If you are unable to attend but still want to contribute, I would absolutely love any donations for our auction or contributions that you could give! Thank you for taking the time to keep up with all my adventures this month!

Blessings,

Avalon Irwin, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022

Oh, what an amazing way to start off 2022!

The first half of January was busy with preparing and adding the final touches for my coronation fundraising dinner on the 15th. While people were hustling around coronation day, Carrie (Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon) and I spent the morning with Robert McLean (my sponsor photographer) at Wallowa Lake getting photos. I also got a couple with Ainsley with the handing over of the MTRO crown. The amount of support I had for my coronation was out of this world!  From family and friends, rodeo queens, board of directors, and local families, I had so many smiling faces out in the crowd that I was pleased to mingle, take photos, and share stories throughout the night.

The night started with an hour of social time, led into the start of my introductions, and then lined up for dinner! I will say it was sure a meal to hit the spot, thanks to Buzz BBQ!  The whole time we had over 150 silent auction items that kept people busy, and throughout dinner we had the first section of the live auction with all sorts of great things from
posts to build fences to air flights and lodging at Wallowa Lake. After dinner, we did the ever so fun and exciting dessert dash, then a bit more live auctions, and finally started to close tables for the silent auction items. The best part of the night was to see all the competition when it came to the dash for the many great desserts! My tables were labeled by rodeos in the Pacific Northwest and many of the people that attended loved to go around and see if they could find their favorite rodeo!

At the conclusion of the night, I was preparing in the back getting my beautiful gray formal dress and fixing up my hair and makeup before it was crowning time. During this time, out front, Queen Ainsley was presenting her farewell video slideshow, and her retiring address. To my own surprise, they were also planning a huge surprise for me on the stage that I didn’t notice until Barb Carr pointed it out. My custom Bob Roy Queen saddle! Looks like Christmas came in January this year for me. I can’t wait to ride in that great saddle all year as your Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2022.

Many people were excited to head home and relax on Sunday but I was headed to Lewiston, Idaho early the next morning for a barrel race with my best friend Addie. My horse and I did super well and had so much fun! Of course, I can’t stay still that long, so on that Monday, I went skiing with my other best friend Alona, and learned some great tricks on my skis until I crashed and got a minor concussion. Oops! I had to miss a day of school for that one.

The next weekend was my first event as Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2022, where I attended the 2022 Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo Queen coronation. I was so happy to be asked to help with both the live and silent auctions, and got to bid on some amazing items and got to take some home. It was so nice to travel with my parents Jeffrey and Vixen, then get to see and talk with many of my rodeo queen friends! I can’t wait to see what the rodeo road has to offer this summer.

For the last weekend in January, I got the great opportunity to spend more time out on the slopes at Anthony Ski Resort out of North Powder, Oregon. Alona Yost and I spent two full days on the hill, learning jumps, turns, tree splitting, and even going down the hill backwards! It was so much fun to spend time outside with the warm sun and fresh groomed
runs. I also got to see close friends on the hills that also offered tips and tricks for us to work on.

February has a lot in store starting with even more coronations, like 2022 Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon’s coronation on the 12th and Miss NPRA on the 26th.I am planning to spend a week in the lower west side riding my horse when we go to Zoey’s Miss NPRA coronation. I’m looking forward to attending these coronations and more in the month to come as well as getting to ride my horses more with barrel racing, and my show horse with jumping and dressage. I’m also excited to find my extra days to go skiing with friends, getting school scholarships completed early and, most importantly, spending time with my family! I can’t believe how fast the year is already going and how soon I will be graduating from high school.

Getting ready for my coronation with posting videos and photos on both my Facebook and Instagram pages!

Brinn and I showed how to run a nice pattern on the barrels the Sunday after my coronation!

I was able to attend the 2022 Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo Queen coronation and was joined by Miss Rodeo Oregon Avalon Irwin.

Ainsley and I got some fantastic photos from the quick photo shoot with Robert McLean the day of my coronation! The weather was just perfect for getting great shots at Wallowa Lake in Joseph, Oregon.

More great pictures from Robert McLean catching Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon Carrie Woods and me at Wallowa Lake! Carrie and I didn’t even plan the wild rags, but it was too perfect that we matched!

The moment we have all been waiting for! Queen Ainsley passing on the crown!

Most do a Father Daughter Dance but we do our secret, not so secret now, handshake. My dad Jeffrey walked me to the stage for my coronation and Robert McLean was able to snap a shot of our handshake!

A whole year early! I was so shocked and beyond words excited to have my saddle presented during my crowning at my coronation. Ainsley and I showed off the great custom saddles made by Bob Roy.

Alona Yost and I took up some new skills the last part of January at Anthony Ski Resort.

During the summer I got my senior photos taken and just this past month got to see the final ones from Robert McLean! My show horse Whisper and I, in our home hay field, got a breathtaking shot.

Great group of beautiful and independent women who represent rodeo! All the queens, courts and ambassadors on stage for a group photo during my coronation, taken by Robert McLean.

Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon Carrie Woods!

Wow has January flown by! This month was full of adventures. But I can’t wait for the rest of the adventures to come throughout this year.

I rang in the new year by getting ready to for the seven-and-a-half-hour drive to Enterprise for Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Destiny’s coronation! We got on the road bright and early Friday morning, we got out to stretch our legs in Pendleton, and drove by the Pendleton Round Up Rodeo Grounds! And boy am I excited to be there in September! We continued on our journey to Enterprise and made it over safely, then got checked into the Eagles View Inn.

The next day I got ready for a photoshoot on Wallowa Lake with Destiny! Robert McLean did an amazing job. Then later that night, I went to the Enterprise Elks Lodge for Destiny’s coronation. It was such a fun night! I got to greet people as the came in the door and met many new faces of some 2022 queens! Later that night I got to help with the live auction items too. It was a great night and I am so excited to spend this year with Destiny!

Then on the 22nd I went to the Columbia County coronation! It was so much fun! I got to know many new 2022 title holders too! I got to help with the live auction as well! Congratulations Queen Sadie and Princess Sophie!

Now I have been busy getting the final touches done for my coronation on February 12th in Tillamook. I’m so excited! It is going to be a great night. We got my flower pack done too! My colors are variations of blues, blush and cream! It turned out amazing. I also just got pictures of my chaps, and oh my goodness, they are gorgeous! Prairie Leather Designs is doing an amazing job and I can’t wait to get them.

The Oregon Queen — January 2022

Every year as December winds down and January starts to get closer I feel a mixture of gratitude for everything the last year has brought, and hesitation because I wonder if the next year could be as good as the last. Having the crown placed on my head last August took me by surprise, and the journey since then has felt like a whirlwind!

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Avalon Irwin, I am twenty six years old, and I have called Central Oregon my home for most of my life. I got started in the horse world when I was 13. I didn’t own my own horse, but I was sure determined to one day! I started by volunteering for a local barn that offered guided trail rides to the public. I worked my way up the ranks until I was a proficient enough horsewoman to start guiding trail rides myself. It was this time in life that I truly started to see how the western lifestyle is so enchanting to those that don’t live it. Every day I was told over and over again how I lived the life guests wish they could live. These moments gave me a deep gratitude for what I had and are an important part of what drives me to want to be a powerful voice within western industries.

After a few years of working hard as a trail guide I had finally saved up enough money to buy my first horse! Her name is Twiggy and she was my guide horse while I was working as a trail guide. She then promptly became my OHSET horse and my best friend. What girl doesn’t need a horse as a best friend to help her through high school? After high school I attended Biola University in Southern California. While I was there I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Inter Cultural Studies and a Minor in Biblical Studies. For those of you who are wondering what that means, it means that I am fascinated with learning about how people interact with each other on a cultural level and I really like biblical theology. Feel free to ask me more about it when you meet me! I love to talk to people about how I use my degree every day.

After college I came home and decided that I loved rodeo culture so much that I wanted to be a part of it. What better way to do that than become a rodeo queen. I studied my heart out, entered my first pageant, and lost. But then I won my first title and from there I was off on my journey to win Miss Rodeo Oregon!

All right, enough about me. Let’s get talking about the stuff that I know everyone is dying to know about. What on earth have I been doing the last few months?! Well let me tell you it feels like I have been doing a whole lot and at the same time not nearly enough! I have been busy planning my coronation as well as learning how to represent the organization to the best of my abilities from some past MRO’s. Part of that experience was getting to observe the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in Las Vegas. Let me tell you that is an experience! If you haven’t had the opportunity to see the America Pageant you definitely need to put it on your bucket list. Those girls worked so hard to get there and they did an amazing job. I loved seeing the different outfits each girl wore to represent herself, and the knowledge that each girl had to share.

While the pageant was going on I had the chance to go down to the Cowboy Christmas Marketplace where I got to watch the girls compete in the Justin Boot parade. I also ran into none other than champion barrel racer herself, Fallon Taylor. I have always liked Fallon for a few reasons, the way she blends western and street fashion being one of them. So it was even more exciting that I happened to be wearing the pants she designed that day! After Cowboy Christmas we headed over to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Boy is that a rodeo like none other! I think my favorite part of it is when the athletes get to run in on horseback behind their state flag. They then all line up in the arena while Miss Rodeo America does a hot lap, and then they follow her out. For those of you that don’t want to do the math on how many athletes are in the arena at one time, trust me when I say it’s a lot!

I am headed off to my next adventure in Colorado! Follow my travels on Facebook and/or Instagram to stay up to date on the latest adventure. Thank you for taking the time to get to know more about me and supporting me on my journey.

Blessings,

Avalon Irwin, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022

January, the start of 2022. What a year and a few months to prepare for the year to come! In the month of January I’m looking forward to my coronation on the 15th where I will have a tri tip dinner, both a live and silent auction, dessert dash, and dutch auction for my saddle. This event is being held at the Elks Lodge in Enterprise Oregon, starting at 5 pm with the social hour and 6 pm with dinner. Until then, I will be working on gathering items for my auctions, and desserts for the dessert dash.

Some cool items I have gotten for my live auction so far include a bison skull, handcrafted silver earrings, a 3 night stay at a lake vacation rental, a macrame elk shed flag, and a wooden wall art flag, just to name a few. Other cool items have been coming in from local supporters in my community like a coffee themed basket, wool blanket, quilt, and many welding horseshoe art and decor. I have also been working on getting more professional photos taken with the crown and some outfits. I really enjoy having photos for posting on social media.

After my coronation, I plan to continue my search for sponsors for my year and in-kind donations of items or services. Some amazing sponsors I have gotten are Legacy Dodge, RDF&P, Red Rose Boutique/Kellerman Logging, and Ground and Sky Health for twice a month acupuncture. I have received sponsors also for my nails for my year, hair products, and Robert McLean Photography. I have my chaps ordered (hope they are done by coronation), a belt with my initials and sunflowers, my breast collar and serape and purse that will pack my autograph sheets. I am also working on the autograph sheets.

Outside of rodeo and the preparation of my coronation, I have been active with friends teaching them how to ski and learning myself how to jump while skiing and do tricks. I also have been busy riding my horses Whisper and Brinn. Whisper and I are getting ready for horse shows in the spring while Brinn and I are learning how to run barrels and poles at the What Would Jesus Do barrel club in Lewiston. School has also been crazy with the start of the new year; scholarships are also starting to open and deadlines are nearing. I have been working hard on typing essays, updating my resume and more!

I plan to keep pushing the way I have been up to this point, like add more rodeos and events to my list for the year, gather and gain more sponsorships, get more hours out on the slopes with skiing, and better my bond with Brinn with our runs and prepare Whisper for upcoming shows.

December barrel race with my new horse Brinn; I have won some checks and learned more about how to ride her.

Alona Yost and I are learning how to ski together and getting some fresh snow at the same time!

Half of our trip in Las Vegas we stayed in the Golden Nugget Hotel on Fremont Street, where we watched rounds 8 and 9 at the Watch Party within the hotel.

For my 18th birthday my family took me to watch the 3rd round of the NFR in Las Vegas: my dad Jeffrey, mom Vixen and best friend Addie Royes.

While in Vegas I was able to tour more of Las Vegas with my friend Addie Royes.

I can’t believe it’s already 2022! It feels like just yesterday was the first day of the pageant. I’m super excited to see what 2022 has in store for me as I travel around the great state of Oregon!

My first appearance as Lady in Waiting was the Miss Rodeo Oregon pageant. It was fun to watch the girls compete! 2022 MTRO Destiny and I got to help sell programs during Horsemanship too. Later that day we headed to the ice cream and cupcake social put on by the Canby Rodeo Court. It was so much fun! I, unfortunately, missed the coronation in the arena, but I am very excited to spend this year with Avalon!

My next event as Lady in Waiting was going to the NPRA finals. Zoe Brooks the 2022 Miss NPRA Lady in Waiting and I, along with a few Little Miss NPRA’s and a Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweetheart, got to walk around and thank all the vendors for coming to the rodeo. Later that night we all got introduced. I was also able to get the crown and both pairs of chaps from Morgan for my first photoshoot! Natalie Kate Images did an amazing job!

Another event I went to as Lady in Waiting was attending the Tillamook County Rodeo Queen Coronation. I got to help carry live auction items and desserts for the dessert auction! I got introduced and spotted two of our Miss Rodeo Oregon board members, Julie Singer and Lynn Haynes! I was able to pick up a few silent auction items for my coronation on February 12th, 2022 at the Officers Mess Hall in Tillamook! It was such a fun night and I am overly excited to be able to spend 2022 with Queen Cassandra, Jr. Miss Piper, and Little Miss Tilly’s Ainslee, Brooklyn, and Susie!

My second to last appearance as Lady in Waiting was being in the Tillamook County Light Parade. I was escorted by Shana Juarez and her mini horse Concho! We started off decorating the pony cart in lights, ribbons, bows, and bells bright and early Saturday morning, we were having second thoughts about going since it was non-stop raining the entire time, but luckily it stopped just before the parade started. It was such a fun night, thank you, Shana!

Finally, I had my last event of 2021. I went to the Hoof ‘N Holler New Years’ Eve Rough Stock Rodeo in Albany. 2020/2021 JMRO Morgan Brownell was also there to officially crown me as the 2022 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon at midnight!

Currently, I have been busy planning my coronation, held on February 12th, in Tillamook! You can contact me at 2022jrmroregon@gmail.com to get tickets. I have also been working on getting my custom chaps made!

I am so excited to get to spend 2022 with so many amazing sash sisters, especially Destiny and Avalon!

The Oregon Queen — October/November 2021

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Samantha Henricks!

You cannot think of September in Oregon without thinking of the Pendleton Round Up! This year, I was able to host Miss Rodeo Canada, Miss Rodeo Idaho, Miss Rodeo Wisconsin, Miss Rodeo Virginia, Miss Rodeo Alaska and Miss Rodeo Tennessee. From dinner at Hamley’s, to riding in the Westward Ho Parade, visiting the Woolen Mills and Hall of Fame, and of course being able to watch the Pendleton Round Up Performance from not only the grandstands, but the grass, were only a few of the highlights of our time together. We also got to tour the Underground and watch a Happy Canyon performance. Most importantly though, state queens from across the country (and Canada) all are now familiar with the saying, “Let’er Buck!”. Thank you to my mom, for being the official chauffeur for the week for all us gals and also a thank you to Carol Shull for planning and organizing the trip!

My next stop brought me to Salem, Oregon for the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Finals. I was Miss NPRA in 2017 and being able to come back as Miss Rodeo Oregon was a blast. Morgan, Ainsley and I were able to spend the weekend together at the last Oregon rodeo that we all would be on horseback for and we even squeezed in some time for my send off party before Vegas. Thank you to everyone who worked to organize the send off party. Here I was able to give a small sneak peek of my Vegas wardrobe and was presented with a beautiful MRO bracelet that I will show off in Vegas.

The last Oregon rodeo I attended for the year was the Columbia River Circuit Finals in Redmond, Oregon. If you have been following along, you will know that I have been to three Columbia River Circuit Finals during my time as Miss Rodeo Oregon. However, this one was accompanied by the first ever Columbia River Circuit Pageant! I again was accompanied by Madi, Miss Rodeo Washington and Kelsy, Miss Rodeo Alaska and new to the group, Maddie, Miss Columbia River Circuit. A highlight for me was being able to carry the Oregon flag alongside the Washington and Idaho flags. Looking back, I think that is the only time I have ever carried the Oregon flag, so it was only fitting that it was at the last rodeo! I want to give congrats to Britney Norby, who was named the 2022 Miss Columbia River Circuit Queen! I also want to point out that Maddie Coleman and I are the proud owners of Rockstar Custom Leather Chaps. Check out the pictures below!

In October, I accepted the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation 50 Horse Challenge and was indeed able to swing my leg over 50 horses during the month! It was a challenge, do not get me wrong, but it was very rewarding and fun to test my horsemanship skills all while riding for breast cancer awareness. As the Miss Rodeo America Pageant is closely approaching, I have been finalizing my wardrobe, studying and finishing last minute details. I am very grateful to those who have lent a helping hand in the past few months. The preparation for Miss Rodeo America is like nothing I have ever done before, but I am more than excited to step on the stage at South Point to represent Oregon!

Once again, thank you to everyone who has made my year(s) successful. To my sponsors, family, friends, coaches and supporters, thank you for your guidance, positivity and endless help throughout the last two years and especially in preparation for Miss Rodeo America. I hope to represent you all, myself and the state of Oregon to best of my abilities at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. See you in Vegas!

Sincerely,

Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2021 Ainsley Goughnour!

I can’t believe that it’s already November and my reign is winding down.

I was able to kick off September by carrying the American Flag for my high school’s home football game. I can’t describe the feeling of carrying our country’s colors in my hometown rodeo arena for my school.

On September 17, I made my way to Pendleton for The Westward Ho Parade. Before the parade I had the privilege of meeting many different title holders. I was finally able to meet Miss Rodeo Idaho, Miss Rodeo Virginia, Miss Rodeo Wisconsin, Miss Rodeo Tennessee, and Miss Rodeo Canada, just to list a few. I was also able to talk with past Miss Teen Rodeo Idaho and now your National High School Rodeo Queen and neighboring state sash sister Miss Teen Rodeo Idaho 2021. Morgan and I rode through the parade in a cute little buggy together. After the parade I quickly jumped off the buggy and made my way to a volleyball tournament that happened to be not too far from Pendleton. It was an eventful and exciting weekend.

September also means the NPRA Finals were in town. The NPRA finals were definitely bittersweet as it was the last rodeo Morgan and I would get to ride in. I had the privilege of greeting people as they entered the stadium, hand out programs, participate in grand entry, carry sponsor flags, and push cows. We also had Sam’s send off party and Miss NPRA Nicole’s thank you party. It’s always a good weekend when I get to be at a rodeo with Sam and Morgan.

October means pageant season is upon us. I attended and helped at the St. Paul Rodeo Court tryouts. I was able to help set up the trail course and pick up scoresheets. Congratulations to your 2022 St. Paul Rodeo Court Queen Sarah Potter, Princesses Hope Riesterer and Macy Montgomery. They all did a fantastic job and have an amazing year to look forward to. The next weekend was the Northwest Youth Rodeo Court Tryouts. They had four contestants vying for the title. This year, Queen Grace Reed and Princess Grace Mulder will be representing NWYRA.

On October 22nd I had the honor of carrying a casket flag for George Trout (US Navy) at the football game so his family could see his flag fly one more time. I feel so humbled and honored that they trusted me to present this special flag on senior night.

On the 30th I made my way to the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo Court tryouts. I’m excited to announce that Alexis Goughnour (my sister) is the 2022 Queen along with Princesses Jessica and Mikayla. I look forward to watching all of these ladies rock it next year!

Be on the lookout for information about your 2022 Miss, Teen and Junior Rodeo Oregon’s coronation fundraisers. You won’t want to miss them.

As sad as it is that my reign is coming to a close, I’ve made so many memories and new friends.  I’m looking forward to the appearances that I do have left and I love this time of year filled with the MRA pageant, NFR and Christmas parades.

With gratitude,

Wow it’s hard to believe this is my last newsletter. I figure why not go out with a bang and recap my last 2 months instead of just 1.
Let’s go back a bit to September and the Pendleton Round-Up. I was able to spend my time in Pendleton with Miss Rodeo Oregon Sam, Miss Rodeo Idaho, Miss Rodeo Tennessee, Miss Rodeo Alaska, Miss Rodeo Wisconsin, Miss Rodeo Virginia and last, but certainly not least, Miss Rodeo Canada. I had a blast with them being able to sign autographs, go to dinner and of course go to Dairy Queen! Along with all of that I was able to participate in the Westward Ho Parade and ride in a buggy along with Ainsley. After that we got to go to the queen’s luncheon. I also got to watch not one but two rodeo performances, one of them being the short go and watching all the 2021 Pendleton Round-Up winners be crowned!!
NPRA Finals was a little sad for Ainsley and I being our last rodeo that we got to ride at. Not only did we get to do our last run-ins we also got to run flags during the rodeo. It was so much fun and most definitely an experience to never forget!
Heading into October I was able to go to Jefferson for the Northwest Youth Rodeo Association tryouts. I have been a part of this association for 10 years and I never miss a chance to help out whether it’s getting flags ready for grand entry the next day, carrying sponsor flags, helping during an event or in this case helping with pageant. It was such a good day and congratulations to both the new queen and princess who just so happen to both be named Grace!!

Going to my only rodeo in October was the Columbia River Circuit Finals rodeo in Redmond. It was so much fun being able to not only watch the rodeo Friday and Saturday but also watch the pageant. Congratulations to Britney Norby on winning the title of Miss Columbia River Circuit!! Heading into my last event of October was once again close to home. We had the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo tryouts. Congratulations to Queen Alexis and Princesses Mikayla and Jessie!! It was so fun to see what all the girls could do and what they brought to the table!

The Pendleton Mounted Band!

Our board secretary, Carol Shull Zimmerman, not only plans the Queens Trip to Pendleton during the Pendleton Round-Up, but she is an active member of the Pendleton Mounted Band!

The band was formed in 1911 but during the 40’s war years were not active. Many of today’s participants grew up in Pendleton but return home for Round-Up and to take part yearly. Randy Morgan (past music director of Enterprise High School) is now the music director. Neva Hascall (Pendleton rancher), with the help of her cousin Kari Hascall, provide many of the horses for riders who no longer live in rural areas. They have appeared at many rodeo parades including the Reno Rodeo in Reno, Nevada, Ennis, Montana, Walla Walla, Washington, Sisters, OR, as well as the Portland Rose Parade.

Besides the two Round-Up parades–the Dress Up Parade which kicks off the Pendleton festivities and later on the week the Westward Ho Parade–they also take part in the Happy Canyon performance and play on Friday and Saturday at six stops around the arena while people are finding their seats for the afternoon rodeo performances. Early Saturday mornings of Round-Up, they ride out early to play wake-up calls at many downtown hotels.  They also appear at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) breakfast in Stillman Park, where they play all the military salutes, as well as at some businesses.

Carol carries the American flag in the parades they participate in as well as when they play at arena stops prior to the Round-Up performances. Carol’s late husband Wally played trumpet, his brother Gary the clarinet or saxophone, brother Dennis the big bass drum, and brother Jeff plays trombone and his wife Jeanna, the trumpet.

The Oregon Queen — September 2021

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2020-21 Samantha Henricks!

“We fired this year’s queen, now we have a new one.” – JJ Harrison

Well… I would not wholeheartedly agree with this statement, but we did in fact crown the 2022 Miss Rodeo Oregon in Canby on August 21st! After four days of pageant, Avalon Irwin of Bend, Oregon captured the title. I want to give congratulations to all the contestants for putting their best foot forward and representing the western way of life to the best of their ability.

We kicked off Pageant with orientation where we met our judges, contestants family and the pageant committee officially. Thank you to our judges: Jodie, Marv and Vicki. Your time and personal help was very appreciated and I hope Oregon treated you well! Also, to the Miss Rodeo Oregon Board and Pageant Committee, thank you for working tirelessly to out together a stellar pageant for our contestants! Throughout the four days, the contestants and I completed written tests, interviews, impromptu questions, horsemanship, speech and modeling. A highlight of the pageant this year for me was the fashion show. We were able to team up with Boot Barn to showcase some of their outfits, as well as show off our dancing skills (or in my case, a lack of dancing skills). I was able to spend some time with Jessi Jackson (MRO 2018) as we were co-emcees for the event. Here, we were able to share stories about our years and enjoyed listening to contestants speeches, impromptu questions and of course enjoy the entertainment from JJ Harrison, as he once again agreed to be our auctioneer.

Another highlight was being able to participate in the clown act with JJ Harrison during the rodeo performance. Do not ask me why, but I have always wanted to wear one of the sumo suits that JJ is known for. Please enjoy the video below of the act! Also, please give both of those horses some credit for officially being two of the most broke horses at the Canby Rodeo; they are now sumo suit certified! Once again, thank you to everyone on the Canby Fair and Rodeo Board who are always great hosts of the pageant. Thank you to the MRO Board, the contestants and their parents, the Canby Rodeo Court, and of course to my mom for braving the week of pageant with me!

As September is here in full swing, the deadline for the Miss Rodeo America Application has come and gone. I can confidently say that my application has been signed, sealed and delivered and I am now an official contestant of the 2022 Miss Rodeo America Pageant. I am more than excited to continue preparing for the pageant, and before I know it I will be down on the Las Vegas stage representing my home state! Thank you to everyone who has made my years special and possible; I appreciate you all.

The month of September also brings us the iconic Pendleton Rodeo. Here we will have other state queens come and experience all that Pendleton has to offer. Thank you in advance to everyone who has and will play a part in organizing this Pendleton trip for myself and the other state queens. Stay tuned to see what we will be up to! I will also be able to attend the NPRA Finals in Salem this month. I was Miss NPRA in 2017, so going back to Finals as Miss Rodeo Oregon will be a great time!

And lastly, to set the record straight, I have never been fired from a job, regardless of what JJ says!

Sincerely,

Samantha Henricks

Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2020-21 Ainsley Goughnour!

June and July flew by in a blink of an eye and I’m not sure why I thought that August would be any different. Although it wasn’t packed with quite as many rodeos, it was still packed! Many of my school activities started back up: High school volleyball camp and practices (daily doubles; oh my), FFA Leadership retreats, showing Leo at the Oregon State Fair for 4-H, none of which compare to the week I had at the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant, Clackamas Co. Fair and Canby Rodeo.

But first let me tell you about a special invitation I received from a very special little friend of mine. Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweetheart, Sophie, invited me to come and be a part of her pony camp for a few hours. I got to go and help teach all the little cowgirls and cowboys how to throw a rope. I also signed autographs and took lots of pictures. It was a blast.

Up next was rodeo and pageant week. Leo and I were able to participate in three of the five nights at the Canby Rodeo where we took part in the grand entry serpentine and queen hot laps. It was so much fun to be in the rodeo in Canby; my home away from home. We have so many great family memories there and this just added to them. The weather was perfect and the rodeo was awesome. Who could ask for anything more?

Meanwhile, while the fair and rodeo were taking place, so was the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant. There were three amazing ladies vying for the title of 2022 MRO. I felt honored to be included in so many of the pageant activities, starting off with the pageant orientation as well as the PJ Party with fun party games and prizes to delicious food. I tend to get a little competitive when they start the party games. The next day it was time to get a little more serious when we headed over to Boot Barn to choose our outfits for the fashion show. I knew exactly what I wanted to model as soon as I walked in the door and saw it hanging up. It was then time to hustle back for autograph signing and rodeo.

The following morning it was time for horsemanship, one of a rodeo queen’s favorite events. The girls all did great. They each rode their own horse as well as two draw horses. Leo and I got to participate in horsemanship. Let’s just  say Leo didn’t like not being the center of attention so he made sure that all eyes were on him a time or two. I guess he was a little excited for the competition and just couldn’t contain himself. Sometimes you just never know what your horse is going to throw at you. They like to keep you on your toes and keep us guessing.  After horsemanship it was lunch time and then autographs at Swan Island Dahlias. Then a quick wardrobe change and off to mock TV interviews. I loved being on stage with Sam and having her interview me. We got to tell some fun stories of the last couple years.

Saturday of pageant was probably my favorite day of all. What we had been preparing for and staying up late to practice for–the main event so to speak–Fashion Show! We each modeled and danced in our outfits from Boot Barn as well as our formal dress. I was even interviewed by Sam and Jessi where I got to talk about my Senior Project. The girls all looked beautiful in their formal dresses and did a great job with their speeches and impromptu questions. After the fashion show it was on to the grand finale, the crowning of Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022!  Congratulations to Avalon Irwin!

I can say that Tanya, Lynn and the whole MRO board sure know how to put on a great pageant. What an incredible experience. I’m beyond grateful that I was included in so many of the events and activities. The memories will truly last a lifetime.

For those of you who haven’t heard about my senior project, I’m currently collecting belt buckles for Rascal Rodeo which is near and dear to my heart. They “produce rodeos for people with special needs of all ages. Giving them the opportunity to be cowboys and cowgirls but also discover unknown abilities. Showing them they are loved, cared for and accepted.” This is all free of charge and all participants get to choose a belt buckle after their rodeo. If you’re interested in donating, buckles can be sent directly to me (PO Box 523, St. Paul, OR 97137) or dropped off at Double H Western Wear in Salem or Sip City in Newberg.

As you can see, August kept me busy and was filled with many new amazing memories. As rodeo season winds down, I see myself reflecting more and more on the past two years that I’ve had the honor of representing Oregon rodeo and all of the amazing moments that I’ve shared with Sam and Morgan as well as many of my sash sisters, friends and family. I’m looking forward to the next few months of making more memories and making the best of all the time I’ve been blessed with as MTRO 2020/2021.

Graciously,
Ainsley

August was a long month with only a few but fun things!!

It started August 7th with the Keizer Iris Festival parade. I was also joined with the St. Paul Rodeo Queen Kearsten and the Canby Rodeo court Queen Nicole and Princesses Alexa and Marlee. Kid had a great time being the parade horse instead of the show horse for the day. He even helped me with Best Rodeo Queen!

Just 11 days later we were on our way to Canby for the Canby Rodeo and 2022 Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant! We rolled in Wednesday night right before the performance started. Custer and I were able to do the opening serpentine and also do a run in. After that we had the Miss Rodeo Oregon pajama party. I had a blast playing fun games and getting to know the Miss Rodeo Oregon contestants better! Thursday afternoon we all went to Boot Barn and picked out our outfits for the Fashion Show Saturday and ended the night with another great performance.

Friday we had a busy day! We started the day off with Horsemanship which I was able to ride in doing rail work and the serpentine carrying a flag. After that we were off to lunch then to Dahlia Farms to sign autographs! Our last stop before the rodeo was back to the grounds for mock tv interviews. Then off to the 4th performance for the Canby rodeo!

Saturday we had Fashion Show where we got to show off our Boot Barn outfits! We also got to do a dance we had been working on all week and it was a blast! After we got to show off our Boot Barn outfits we got to put on our dresses, model and watch the contestants give their speeches. We then went to the live auction where the contestants brought auction items to be auctioned off!

Saturday night after grand entry we had coronation! Congratulations to the 2022 Miss Rodeo Oregon Avalon Irwin! I know you’ll do a great job representing Oregon!!

Introducing Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022 Avalon Irwin!

I am so excited to introduce myself to you as Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022!

The pageant was incredible and full of so many great moments. The biggest highlight of the contest, for me, was horsemanship. All of us cowgirls pride ourselves on our horses. They are our teammates and our biggest teachers as we grow into better horsewomen, so to have the opportunity to get to ride so many amazing horses was a dream come true. All of the horses were absolutely a joy to ride.

Since the pageant I have had the opportunity to go to Gaston and attend the car show, I have been enjoying the fall weather out on the trails with my horse, and I’ve been preparing for this upcoming year.

My next stop will be Vegas to watch Sam compete at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant and I am so excited to get to cheer her on and wish her all the best as she finishes out the year!

Thank you, Jeff, for the skills and expertise you bring to our pageants!  Lynn Haynes got a quick video of the setting for Avalon’s first photo shoot at Swan Island Dahlias!

Meet one of our Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweethearts!

Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweetheart Charlotte Crader has had an adventurous fun-filled summer, and it all started at The Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweetheart Pageant.  Being crowned in the Tillamook Rodeo arena was a huge highlight for Charlotte over the summer, but it didn’t stop there. Traveling around the State of Oregon and beyond, proudly wearing her Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweetheart sash and crown, Charlotte has so far attended at least 9 rodeos and numerous other small town events, parades and county fairs.

For Charlotte, being a Sweetheart title holder means sharing her love of rodeo and building lasting friendships with everyone she meets along the way. Charlotte is greatly appreciative of the opportunities she’s received through The Miss Rodeo Oregon Foundation, and is looking forward to what the future holds!

(Thank you, Julie Ann Crader!)

Following the example of many organizations–including Miss Rodeo America–who honor people making significant contributions to their mission, Miss Rodeo Oregon, Inc. Foundation is proud to announce the formation of a new MRO Hall of Fame.  We are now accepting nominations for the founding “Class of 2021”!

The nomination form is very simple and can be obtained by visiting the website.  Nominees might include members, rodeos, committees, vendors, or anyone who has made a notable contribution.  Nominations can be emailed to our corporate address missrodeooregonincfoundation@gmail.com or they can be mailed to the address listed with the nomination form.  Nominations MUST be postmarked by November 1, 2021.

A commemorative Hall of Fame buckle will be awarded in a special ceremony at the coronation of 2022 Miss Rodeo Oregon Avalon Irwin!

The Oregon Queen — August 2021

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Samantha Henricks!

For the past few months I was looking forward to my trip to Colorado Springs, CO for one reason, to attend the 2020 Hall of Fame Inductions and Cowboy Ball, and boy it did not disappoint! So far, this opportunity to attend the Inductions and the Cowboy Ball, along with seeing the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy has been a major highlight! If you have never been to the Hall of Fame, I would highly encourage you to go. The history of rodeo and western heritage runs deep and the museum depicts just that! From the Miss Rodeo America showcase, to previous Hall of Fame Inductees to National Finals Rodeo memorabilia and statistics, the place is sure to please any rodeo fan! Especially fans of the Pendleton Round Up and St. Paul Rodeo, as both of their flags hang proudly in the Museum. I was able to attend the Cowboy Ball the night before the Induction Ceremony. Here, the eight inductees were recognized and a fundraiser for the Hall of Fame was conducted. The next morning I attended the Induction Ceremony where I was able to listen to each inductee tell their rodeo story and watch them receive the great honor of being inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. What I loved about hearing each story was the different paths each person took to get to that stage. No route was the same, but what was similar in their stories was their passion for not only the sport of rodeo, but the western lifestyle, values and morals that rodeo embodies. Each spoke about their rodeo family and how rodeo shaped their lives and gave them the opportunities to be successful and leave their mark in the industry. Congrats to the class of 2020 Inductees Martha Josey, Ellensburg Rodeo, Randy Witte, Cody Ohl, Jim Sutton, Butch Kirby, G-65 Grated Coconut and Sunni Deb Backstrom; your contribution to the sport of rodeo is greatly appreciated!

While in Colorado, I also was able to attend a performance of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo before heading off to the “Daddy of them all”, Cheyenne Frontier Days! In Cheyenne, I was able to attend the Miss Frontier Brunch in the Indian Village, three rodeo performances, two concerts, a parade and I even snuck in some shopping! To say the least, it was a busy 3 days! I was able to meet up with Miss Rodeo Washington and Miss Rodeo South Dakota, as we shared a host home, as well as see many other state queens, including catching up with Miss Rodeo America! For one of the rodeo performances we were taken into the sky box that sits right on top of the roping box. Here you had a perfect view of the infamous 30 foot score that Cheyenne is known for. I enjoyed watching the horses wait patiently in the box until the calf or steer reached the scoreline and then the horse and cowboy would take off like a shot! In many ways, Cheyenne Frontier Days reminded me a lot of Oregon’s Iconic Pendleton Round Up. From the Native American Culture, to the large stadium, and the split riding skirts, all the way down to the rich history and tradition that each rodeo embodies. Though I may be “Let ‘er Buck” biased, I still had a great time experiencing all that is Cheyenne Frontier Days!

Next, I headed off to another deep-rooted rodeo here in the state, Chief Joseph Days. I was reunited with Ainsley and Morgan where we were able to capture photos, attend the queen’s lunch, ride in each performance and the parade! I was again able to ride one of Mitch Coleman’s horses for each rodeo performance, which was a blessing as his horses are solid when it comes to specialty acts…and Joseph is full of them! From fireworks, to trick riding to bullwhips, fire and gunshots, my horse was steady as they come! I was also able to get on a horse that I called Big Betty that was owned by the Wecks family; Big Betty took great care of me during the parade. The Wecks were also gracious enough to house my mom and I for the weekend at their beautiful property in Joseph! Joseph reminded me of what a true “hometown rodeo” feels like, and why those rodeos are my favorite! Communities that rally behind their rodeo, rodeo court, personnel, committee and contestants make the best rodeos, if you ask me!

To wrap up the month, I headed down to Las Vegas, Nevada to have my official headshots taken by the wonderful Judy and Terry Wright with Las Vegas Image Studio. I always admired their work and hoped that one day I could get behind Judy’s makeup brush and Terry’s camera. I loved working with them both, and am anxiously awaiting to see the final product!

Heading into August, I am most looking forward to the 2022 Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant. They say a year goes by fast, but I am here to tell you, so does two! I feel like it was just yesterday that I was being crowned in the Canby Rodeo arena. Stay tuned in to the Miss Rodeo Oregon Facebook page as we will be posting pageant updates and live videos! I want to wish the contestants the best of luck as they are in final preparation for the pageant.

After the pageant, I am hosting another Poker Ride fundraiser in my hometown and I will be able to attend the Grants Pass Booster Club Auction. Then comes September, which means Ellensburg Rodeo, Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo, NPRA Finals and, of course, the Pendleton Round Up!

Thank you all for the support and remember to stay tuned into the Miss Rodeo Oregon Facebook page during pageant week!

Sincerely,

Samantha Henricks, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2020-21

Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2021 Ainsley Goughnour!

Last month I left off with Cowboy Christmas and how it’s one of my favorite times of the year. I spent most of the week at the St. Paul Rodeo in my hometown. I rode in the grand entry and even ran a few sponsor flags. Leo learned he has another gear and kicked it up a notch on his flag run and boy can he run! After a couple days in St. Paul, I made the drive down to Eugene for the Eugene Pro Rodeo with JMRO, Morgan, and the Columbia River Circuit Queen, Maddie. We
were greeted with smiles and wonderful hospitality. This was my first time attending the Eugene rodeo and I had a great time. I was able to do a queen run, flag run and push cows. I even ran into Katherine Merck, 2016 Miss Rodeo America.

The next day, I headed back to St. Paul for the July 3rd performance as well as a little photoshoot with Sam and Morgan. The 4th of July was a crazy and incredible day. I started the day with the parade down main street; it was great to see so many familiar faces. After the parade, we headed straight to the queens luncheon hosted by Kearstan, St. Paul Rodeo Queen.  We then saddled up and rode in the afternoon and evening performances. One of the greatest
parts about riding in the St. Paul Rodeo arena was getting to ride with my sister as past royalty.  Riding in our hometown rodeo together was one of the best moments for me.

After the big 4th of July week, Leo and I had one day to rest and repack and head to the county fair. I am so proud of how Leo transitioned from being a rodeo queen horse to a show horse.  We qualified for the state fair in all of our events which is way more than I expected. Leo has done everything I’ve asked of him and so much more. I am blessed to have him as my partner.

The following weekend, I made it to the Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Friday night. The rodeo was packed and it was clear that the fans came to have a good time and enjoy some good ole rodeo. On Saturday, I rode in another hometown parade, the Hubbard Hop Festival Parade alongside Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweetheart, Sophie Price. She was definitely the star of the show. Miss Sophie shines wherever she goes and is so much fun to be around.

On Sunday I was able to attend the MRO annual members meeting as well as the MRO contestant orientation meeting. I’m looking forward to seeing who the Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022 will be. I hope you can join us at the Clackamas Co. Fair and Canby Rodeo to cheer on the girls as they compete for the title.

After a little break, it was time to head over to the other side of the state for the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo. Joseph is one of the most beautiful places in Oregon. Morgan and I took a little time without our crowns on and played a little mini golf and enjoyed some ice cream on our first day in Joseph. I rode in 3 of the 4 grand entries at Chief Joseph Day in their serpentine. I was able to catch up with and watch 2022 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon as she is one of the 2021 Chief Joseph Days Queens. Friday, Morgan and I participated in the kids parade, which was so fun to be a part of. All of the little kids loved marching down Main Street.  On Saturday, Leo and I rode in the Grand Parade with many of my sash sisters. After an incredible week in Joseph, I’d like to thank 2022 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Destiny and her family for letting us stay at their ranch. I have the best rodeo family! Keep an eye out for pictures taken by Robert McLean. He was so generous with his time in Joseph and got some great shots.

As the months fly by, I can’t help but to be so grateful for all the amazing people that this title has brought into my life. I am excited to see what next month brings.

With Gratitude,
Ainsley

My July started June 30th at the one and only St. Paul Rodeo. I was able to go to 5 out of 6 performances of the St. Paul Rodeo and go to the Eugene Pro Rodeo on the 2nd. I’ve been going to the St. Paul Rodeo all my life with it being my second hometown rodeo. My mom was the 1995 St. Paul Rodeo Princess, my great grandpa was a director along with being one of the first members, my grandpa was a director and now my dad is a director. I’ve been able to carry sponsor flags in grand entry for years and this year was extra special being able to do grand entry as Jr. Miss Rodeo Oregon and also getting the opportunity to carry sponsor flags during the performance.

In the middle of the week, Ainsley and I made the trip to Eugene to be a part of the Eugene Pro Rodeo. We had the pleasure of being able to make a run-in, carry sponsor flags and I was able to push cows. After that we were back to St. Paul to finish the week. Come the 4th of July, we started the morning nice and early for the parade through town. My dad was also in the parade carrying a military flag and he carried one during both grand entries on the 4th.

The day we got home from St. Paul, we were packing up and getting ready to leave for fair the next morning. Kid, Custer and I went to county fair where Kid and I qualified in all our events to go to State Fair. We did Western and English equitation, Trail and Showmanship. Even though Custer and I didn’t qualify to go to state for gaming we were .04 seconds from qualifying in keyhole. Custer did amazing with him never being in that arena and still learning how to run. We will be at State Fair though gaming in FFA.

After being able to rest a little, Custer and I were off to youth rodeo. With it being Custer’s first youth rodeo, I was just happy he handled it like a pro. I let him do what he wanted and we came home with some new pr’s I will forever be thankful for. This was the same arena where last year Tommy and I ran pr’s in poles and ended up winning pole bending. We were also able to make a run-in and flag run on Saturday. With Chester not being able to be ridden at the moment, Amber Riesterer was kind enough to let me borrow her horse Arizona for breakaway roping. Even though Chester and I had been gearing up and getting ready to compete in breakaway roping for the first time together, Arizona took great care of me and did amazing!!

The last weekend of July we were on the road again but this time to Joseph for the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo. We got there on Wednesday so Ainsley and I just watched the performance and cheered on Destiny Wecks, one of the Chief Joseph Days Queens and the 2022 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon. The next three days we had a great time doing the grand entry serpentine. Ainsley and I got to do the kid parade on Friday and following that was the parade on Saturday. Ainsley and I also got some time to go play some mini golf and have a little fun. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Wecks family for letting me keep my horse at your house all week!!

Stay tuned for my August travels. We have some fun stuff planned!!

The Oregon Queen — July 2021

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Samantha Henricks!

I can say that rodeo is back in full swing and it is great to see! Over the last month I have traveled back and forth across the state to the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, followed by the Crooked River Roundup and most recently spent the iconic Cowboy Christmas at the St. Paul Rodeo. Union, Oregon is home of the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show and Rodeo and boy what a fun time I had while I was there! I had never been to EOLS before and personally going to rodeos that I have never attended are my favorite as I get to experience new places! I attended the Queen’s Lunch, three rodeo performances as well as a parade through downtown. My favorite part of my time in Union was the horse races that are held between rodeo events. I have never been to a rodeo that holds races during the rodeo before and it was great to see the crowd cheering on their favorite horses!

My next venture took me to Prineville, Oregon for the 75th Annual Crooked River Round-Up Reride. I was able to catch up with Miss Rodeo America, Jordan Tierney, who was graciously brought to the CRR by The Posie Shoppe in Prineville. We had a great time, kicking off the week with a cattle drive through town, though it was more of a cattle scramble through town. I will apologize again to the residents of downtown Prineville, as they probably spent the day after the cattle drive ridding their lawns of any cattle and horse hoof prints. Let’s just say the cattle were not the most cooperative! Moving forward through the week, I attended each rodeo performance, was able to present the American Flag, participated in the parade, queens lunch, and even got a chance to sign autographs at The Posie Shoppe. My host home at the Loftesness was nothing short of a great time, as Alan and Judy (parents of 2006 MRO Trena Loftesness Anderson) are great hosts! I also was able to borrow a horse from the Sutherlin Family and spend time with Keirnan Sutherlin who is Little Miss Crooked River Round-Up and Emily Lauman, Miss Crooked River Round-up.

The following weekend brought on the iconic Cowboy Christmas! I spent my time in St. Paul where I was able to attend all six rodeo performances, a queen’s lunch and parade. Molalla’s own Mitch Coleman was kind enough to lend me his horses Amigo and Bueno for the week. I have officially decided that the horses Mitch owns are not only the best pickup horses, but serve as mighty fine queen horses as well. All year I looked forward to going to the St. Paul Rodeo and spending time with their Queen, Kearsten Friedrich. The St. Paul Rodeo Committee was more than welcoming and put on a great performance after having to cancel in 2020. I was also finally reunited with Ainsley and Morgan in St. Paul where we were able to snag a few photos of the trio back in action! The three of us also have a competition going to see who can get the most rodeo contestants to sign the underside of their chaps throughout the year. At St. Paul, I was able to get rodeo icons Tuff Cooper, Jermey Buhler, Shad Mayfield, Hunter Reaume and Cody Cabral to take a sharpie to my chaps. On to the next rodeo and more signatures!

I did not forget to mention the beautiful and talented contestants we have for Miss Rodeo Oregon this year! Avalon Irwin, Britney Norby, Katie Ralston and Keeara Harmon all deserve your support and encouragement as the pageant keeps getting closer and closer! Sending in the application is the first step and I want to congratulate these ladies on taking the plunge! Lastly, congrats to our 2022 titleholders who were crowned at the Tillamook County Rodeo. To Destiny Wecks and Carrie Woods, pin down your hats ladies, you are about to have a packed year full of adventures!

As I move through July, I am looking forward to attending the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Cowboy Ball and a performance of the Pikes Peak Rodeo in Colorado Springs. Then I head off to the daddy of them all, Cheyenne Frontier Days! After that I will be back in Oregon for Chief Joseph Days and the Miss NPRA Pageant. See you at the next rodeo!

Sincerely,

Samantha Henricks, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2020

With the beginning of June brought the end of the school year and the beginning of summer rodeo season. I kicked the month off by heading over to the St.Paul Trail Ride and pancake breakfast where I was able to spend some time with the SPR Queen Kearsten, Sister’s Rodeo Queen, Mary and JMRO Morgan as well as take some pictures with some cute little cowboys and cowgirls. It was great to see the annual tradition back with so many people enjoying themselves.

The following weekend I made a trip up to Cle Elum, WA for my sweet sash sister, Miss Teen Rodeo Washington, Chloe’s coronation. She’s been waiting over a year for her celebration and I’m so glad I was able to make the trip. She had a beautiful celebration. Congratulations Chloe!

It was then time to get ready for the 2022 Jr./Teen Miss Rodeo Oregon pageant and Tillamook Rodeo. Wow! what a weekend. Speeches, mock TV interviews, horsemanship, modeling, parade, luncheon and rodeo performances all packed into two days. It was a blast to spend time with the contestants, and all of the visiting royalty. I’m so proud of all of the contestants; they put in so much work and preparation for the pageant. Leo and I were honored to set the pattern at the horsemanship portion of the pageant and I’m so proud of how he did. We had a blast doing our run-ins at the rodeo as well. Tillamook Rodeo was a great host for the pageant and I had an amazing time with a lot of new memories. I was also honored to award the first buckle for the Gatlins Sugar Jet Memorial Award, in honor of my amazing horse, Pete, to Kambri Nelson. Congratulations to the 2022 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon, Destiny Wecks and 2022 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon, Carrie Woods. You have an amazing year ahead of you and I can’t wait to see all that you accomplish.

After a couple days of rest, it was time to get ready for Cowboy Christmas, which is one of my favorite times of year. I’m so excited to have rodeo back in full swing, especially in my home town. The first night of Cowboy Christmas was spent in St. Paul, where I took part in the grand entry, carried a sponsor flag and rode in the barrel truck. Let me tell you what an awesome feeling it is to be in the St. Paul Rodeo Arena. As for the rest of Cowboy Christmas, I’ll tell you all about it in next month’s newsletter.
Joyously,
Ainsley, Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon

Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Morgan Brownell!

Tillamook sure is the Biggest Little Show on the Coast!

We started the 2022 Jr/Teen Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant off with interviews. In this portion of the pageant the girls were one on one interviewed with the judges where they asked them a variety of questions.  Following that we had Mock TV Interviews where the girls got interviewed as if they had just won and how they would represent as their title. Our third event of the pageant was horsemanship. Horsemanship is judged off of the horse and riders connection of the riders ability to ride and handle their horse. They have 2 patterns, one being a pattern of their choice and the other being a set pattern. They also do a grand entry and serpentine.  Our last thing for the night was grand entry then we were done for the night.

The next morning we woke up nice and early to do the June Dairy Parade through the town of Tillamook! It was a blast and Custer enjoyed it for being his third parade.  Right after we got off our horses we quickly changed and we’re off to do the queens luncheon and speeches. I got to help walk two Miss Rodeo Oregon Sweethearts up to the stage and ask them questions! After that I introduced the Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon contestants along with asking them impromptu
questions. Speeches is a timed speech where the girls talk about a topic they were given. They are judged off of their speaking ability in front of a crowd.

Our last thing of the night was our final run-in along with Ainsley and I carrying the first sponsor flags of the night. During the performance we had the 2022 Jr/Teen Miss Rodeo Oregon coronation. Congratulations to 2022 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Destiny Wecks and 2022 Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon Carrie Woods!! I can’t wait to see where you two go!

Carrie will be a seventh grader at Nestucca Valley Middle School in the fall. Carrie excels in academics and loves playing softball and volleyball. She enjoys riding her twelve-year-old Quarter Horse mare “Sue” and whether it is sorting cows, barrel racing, trail riding or just arena work, she loves it all. Carrie has also been a Tillamook County 4-H member for the last three years showing dairy cows, rabbits, and market goats. Carrie has always been around rodeo and was the 2019 Jr. Miss Tillamook Rodeo Queen. She loves to promote the western way of life everywhere she goes. Carrie looks forward to expanding her rodeo queen experiences.  Congratulations, Carrie!

The Oregon Queen — May/June 2021

Samantha Henricks, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021!

When planning my year of travels, I knew I had to make a stop at Bishop Mule Days. As many of you may know, I grew up showing performance mules at various mule shows, including Bishop Mule Days. I won World Champion Youth as a 13 and under competitor in back-to-back years and then was awarded Reserve World Champion Youth 14-17 and in my final year as a youth, I won World Champion Youth 14-17.

The first Miss Rodeo Oregon I ever met was actually Nicole Shrock at Bishop Mule Days in 2013. Nicole put rodeo queening on my “radar” and encouraged me to try out for my first rodeo queen title and years later, here we are! I knew I wanted to go to Bishop Mule Days as Miss Rodeo Oregon to complete the circle. I made the 10 hour trek to Bishop, California and was able to watch many events. From dressage to packing, gymkhana events to donkey races and western pleasure, Mule Days really encompasses the versatility of a mule. My mom also showed her mule, OM Frosted Mocha, and won Reserve World Champion Amateur. My whole family over the years has shown at Bishop at one time or another. It really has become a tradition to make it to Mule Days every year for my family.

I was joined in Bishop by Rayna Rogers, the 2021 Mother Lode Round Up Queen. Rayna sang the National Anthem each performance and did so beautifully. I was also able to meet Maycee Knight, the California High School Rodeo Queen. At the performances, I was able to ride a family friends roping mule named Ruby Rue. She was great and handled every performance with ease!

Prior to going to Bishop, I was able to catch up with former Miss Rodeo Oregons, Nicole Shrock, Ashley Zeigler Minaise and Sara Marcus Deraldine on their podcast, Crowning Connections. Here, I spoke about growing up showing performance mules and competing at various shows along the west coast and how it shaped me into the person I am today. If you have not listened to it, I encourage you to do so. These ladies do a fantastic job and have continued to advocate for the western way of life and agriculture long after their year as Miss Rodeo Oregon. I really believe showing a mule in a horse dominated sport gave me the courage to be my authentic self and to be confident in any situation. During the week of Mule Days, I was also able to do an Instagram takeover of their Crowning Connections page!  Go check it out to see pictures and behind the scenes of the most iconic events in Bishop!

I have to touch on the fact that applications are due for Miss Rodeo Oregon 2022 in just a few short days, June 15th! I cannot encourage young women enough to take the plunge and turn an application in. This has been an experience full of adventures and opportunities that I will cherish for a lifetime. Do not think twice, turn in that application!

I am having a bit of deja-vu as we start to prepare for summer rodeos! I am excited to hit the ground running, starting with Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, followed by the Crooked River Roundup and the iconic Cowboy Christmas in St. Paul and Eugene! Make sure you stay tuned in on social media to follow Ainsley, Morgan and I on our travels across the state!

Sincerely, Samantha Henricks Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021

Ainsley Goughnour, Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2021!

I have been busy since the last time I wrote to you all. After the Miss Rodeo Oregon clinic, events have picked up and I have been all over the place. I’ve been on one side of the state and back again…multiple times.

On April 18th, I traveled to Joseph where the 2020-2021 Chief Joseph Days Honorary court was crowned after a long wait. Congratulations to Queens Brianna, Destiny, and Casidee.  Joseph is in good hands and I can’t wait to spend the summer with these girls.

The next weekend, I was a little closer to home where I spent my weekend at the Oregon Ag Fest. The St. Paul Rodeo Queen Kearsten, JMRO Morgan, and I assembled and handed out agventure kits as the kids headed out onto the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo grounds to see first hand what agriculture is all about and how important it is in their everyday life. I can’t forget to mention my new friends, Pendleton (a mini horse) and Sunday (the horse); we took a few walks around the grounds together. I spent time with the Oregon FFA State Officers, welcoming people and handing out goodies as they came into the fairground and started their adventure through the Ag Fest. I had a ton of fun reaching out to kids and adults alike, teaching them just a little bit about agriculture and how it impacts our lives.

The following weekend, I went back to Eastern Oregon for the Pendleton Cattle Baron Weekend. Morgan and I had the opportunity to welcome people as they came into the Pendleton Convention Center. Pendleton sure knows how to get “ranchy” and have a good time. I was able to attend their Ranch Rodeo, the first ranch rodeo I’ve attended and man was it wild but oh so good. I helped sell raffle tickets and then at the end of the night I was privileged enough to hand out awards to the hardworking cowboys and cowgirls. The next day I handed out programs for the horse and dog auction taking place later that day and interacting with everyone as they came in. For lunch, we walked around and sampled tri-tip from the Buckaroo Cook Off. Team Meat Sweats–also known as McKillip Catering–won the People’s Choice award (they had my vote). The cattle dog and ranch horse auction was a site to behold. The animals were incredible and an absolute blast to watch all weekend. The Ranch Bronc riding and steer roping competition were two of the many highlights of the weekend along with finally meeting the Happy Canyon and Pendleton Round-Up Courts and throwing shirts and hats to the crowd. Thank you to the Pendleton Cattle Barons board for their amazing hospitality and welcoming feeling. This is definitely an event I’d recommend attending if you haven’t already.

May 9th I headed to Boring, Oregon for the Mt. Hood Roughstock Rodeo. The future’s looking bright for rodeo in Oregon! The competition was tight. Before the rodeo I was at the front door handing out an assortment of stickers, coupons, and programs. Holly and I ran a hot lap, sponsor flag runs, and threw shirts to the crowd. Congratulations to Plus one Productions on a successful rodeo!

May 20th will be a highlight for my reign. I finally got to meet one of my best friends in person, Molly Below, Miss Teen Rodeo Missouri. Molly is one of those people who has a contagious positive attitude. It was a short visit but I know there will be more in the future! A big thank you to Molly and her mom, Jenny, for being so welcoming and fun! We are already making plans to see each other again.

This past weekend was the one and only Spray Rodeo. We got to kick off the weekend with a parade through the streets of Spray (and I couldn’t be prouder of my partner Leo; he acted like an old pro). I got to show off my Prairie Leather chaps, cuffs, and breast collar during the parade! Leo and I then made our way through the rodeo arena together for the first time with Pete looking over us. He did amazing with his hot lap, grand entry with fireworks blasting right
behind him, and running a sponsor flag. I took some time walking around with the Canby Court–Queen Nicole, and Princesses Marlee and Alexa as well as Santiam Canyon Stampede Queen Allie, signing autographs and taking pictures with kids. Congrats to Allison the Spray Rodeo queen on an amazing rodeo and job well done. Thank you to my parents for all of their help throughout the weekend. Thank you to Leo for taking such good care of me and exceeding all my expectations. I’m looking forward to many more rodeos with Leo.

Phew, that was a lot to fit into one newsletter. As you can see, things have picked up quite a bit and I’m loving every minute of it. I can’t wait to see what I have to report on next month!

Finally getting to meet Miss Teen Rodeo Missouri, Molly Belows, in person.

Morgan Brownell, Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021!

The last weekend in April, I was invited to attend the Oregon Ag Fest at the Clackamas County Fair Grounds and even though it looked a little different this year, I still had a blast! I started out Saturday morning walking Sunday the horse while Ainsley was walking Pendleton the pony. We were also able to hand out Agventure kits that we also had the pleasure of putting together! The kids were so happy to be able to get those! Coming on Sunday we were able to hand out Agventure kits again and we also got to greet people as they came in! Everyone was so happy to not only get out and go to Ag Fest but to also see us!!

Coming into May, Ainsley and I went over the mountain to Pendleton to take part in the Pendleton Cattle Barons Weekend. We got to greet people coming into the trade show, Ranch rodeo and Ranch bronc riding. We were able to meet the Pendleton Round Up court and spend some time with them throwing shirts and hats during the rodeo and bronc riding. I got to see my first Horse and Working Dog sale and holy cow are those animals talented!! My brother also came down to visit from college in La Grande and watched the rodeo with us. Thank you Pendleton Cattle Barons for letting me come and participate in your event!!

After that we had a few days off then headed to Boring for the Plus 1 Productions Rough Stock Rodeo. I was able to hand out programs and greet people coming in the doors then straight to my horse to get on and do a run in! After that we watched a little bit of the rodeo then handed out shirts and some other cool goodies and once the night was over Ainsley and I did one final lap around the arena with sponsor flags! Thank you to John Jardine and Tanya Utberg for the amazing event!!

Custer and I had a last minute parade in Silverton at the Silverton Pet Parade. For Custer‘s first parade, he did amazing. The streets were filled with so many happy people waiting to see all the animals ranging from chickens and ducks all the way up to horses!! It was so cool to see all the different types of animals dressed up in so many outfits.

I was able to kick off the 2021 rodeo season with the Spray Rodeo. After going to this rodeo for years, I finally got to participate in it doing run-ins, flag runs, chasing cattle and doing the quarter mile race. We started Saturday off with the parade through town seeing everyone so happy to see us. Right after that we headed to the arena for the rodeo. This was Custer’s first rodeo and he did awesome. He didn’t care at all about the fireworks at the back of the arena. After the grand entry we headed to the other end of the arena to do flag runs and push some cattle which I used Chester for. Did you know this isn’t Chester’s first time at the Spray Rodeo for Jr. Miss Rodeo Oregon? In 2012, JMRO Ashley Ferch used him for not only her run in but also the quarter miles race!! That same year my dad roped there and did the race on Chester too and they both won the race on the same horse!! Even though Chester and I didn’t get first like he’s done before we still got third! The second performance Custer had double duty doing both a run in and carrying flags. Also a huge thank you to my dad for not only tacking up and un-tacking my horses for me but also warming up one horse while I was on the other. I don’t know what I would do without you! Overall it was an amazing weekend with so many amazing queens and so many memories made!!

The Oregon Queen — March/April 2021

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Samantha Henricks!

Here is to getting back into the groove!
At the beginning of March, I was able to travel to Canby to show support to the host rodeo court of the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant. Their court was having a Gymkhana Play Day to help raise funds for their year. Here I was loaned a horse by Princess Alexa and presented the American Flag and completed my first hot lap of 2021!
Next, I headed east to kick off the 2021 rodeo season in Central Oregon at the High Desert Stampede! Joined by Morgan, Ainsley, Miss Rodeo Washington Madi Casto, and Miss Rodeo Alaska Kelsy Konkright, we had a great time celebrating rodeo coming back to Oregon. I started off the weekend by attending the Kick Off Party. For each performace, I had the opportunity to present the American Flag under the production of Haley Bridwell of Bridwell Pro Rodeos. We also snuck in time for the exceptional Rascal Rodeo and a Rhett Rodeo for our younger fans! It sure has been a drought the past year, but it felt great to be back in the saddle! The High Desert Stampede Committee did a phenomenal job, setting the bar for the rest of 2021 very high!
I was home for a short week and then back on the road to Central Oregon for the 2021 Miss Rodeo Oregon Clinic. I think I need to invest in a second home in Central Oregon; it would be much more convenient…. Miss Rodeo Oregon Clinic was a nothing short of a success. There were many attendees and wonderful clinicians who shared their knowledge, tips and tricks! I was also able to swap out my hat for my coaching cap to help with horsemanship for the day. Being able to see the drive and motivation from the young ladies who attended the clinic was admirable. Thank you again to our clinicians, especially Taylor McNair, who did a great job.
Next on the calendar for me is our second Southern District OHSET meet! Not only will I have my team to get through the meet, but I also volunteer to organize grand entry and sit on the awards committee for the district! I also just finalized arrangements for my coronation dinner and auction!
Once again, thank you all for the encouragement, support and commitment to the Miss Rodeo Oregon program!

Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2021 Ainsley Goughnour!

With spring brings new beginnings… and the past couple months have brought many new and exciting adventures. I’m beyond thrilled to be out and about promoting rodeo and participating in events again.

At the end of February I was able to travel to Grants Pass to run Leo in Sam’s Miss Rodeo Oregon Gymkhana Fundraiser. She had a great turnout and Leo and I had a ton of fun at the event. March continued on with the gymkhana theme.  The Clackamas Co. Fair and Canby Rodeo Court hosted a Coronation Games which I was able to come watch Morgan run in as well as hand out a few awards and hang out with the CCF&R court, Queen Nicole and Princesses Alexa and Marlee.

Next up was the first rodeo of the season…the High Desert Stampede. What a treat it was to be at a rodeo again. Signing autographs, taking pictures, helping at the Rhett’s Rodeo as well the Rascal Rodeo were definitely highlights of the weekend. I just love to see the smiling faces and excitement in the eyes of all the kids. I’d like to say a special thank you to the directors and volunteers of the High Desert Stampede for making this event happen.

The following weekend I was back in central Oregon for the Miss Rodeo Oregon Queens clinic at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Let me just say Oregon is in good hands. Everything from the materials provided, the amazing clinicians and speakers, and the delicious food was top notch. If you missed it this year make sure and watch for next year’s dates and get registered.  You won’t want to miss it. I feel so much more prepared for the year to come especially now that Leo and I were able to get in this extra practice time. Thank you to everyone involved in making this clinic possible. I’d also like to thank the board for letting me sneak out to give my FFA district officer election speech (I’m happy to announce that I am the 2021-2022 secretary for the Capital District FFA) and to go play a quick game of volleyball with my team right in the middle of it all. To say it was a busy weekend would be an understatement. But it was so much fun and so insightful. And I loved seeing all my sash sisters and meeting new friends. And of course meeting Taylor McNair, 2019 Miss Rodeo America, was awesome!

I can’t wait to see what I have to report on next month and share my adventures with you. Until then stay safe, stay healthy and I’ll see you down the rodeo road.
Cheerfully, Ainsley!

This month I was able to attend the High Desert Stampede with so many other amazing rodeo queens. We were able to do Rhett’s Rodeo Friday night following the second performance which was my first. Going into Saturday morning we got up early to volunteer at the Rascal Rodeo. It was so much fun being able to help all the kids. Ainsley and I teamed up and did the ring toss together. Not only did we help others with it we had to get a little competitive with it and compete against each other. That night we had another action packed performance watching the rodeo and signing autographs!

This may not have been in March but why not share it? I had the pleasure of attending the Miss Rodeo Oregon clinic with host clinician Taylor McNair. It was such a great experience and such a good time! I got to meet some great people and learn so much. It was Custer’s first event as a queen horse and he did amazing! He loved it and definitely loved doing the queen runs! A special thank you to everybody that made this event possible!!

As some may know I lost a very special part of my team at the beginning of the month. Tommy unexpectedly passed away after a very long and hard night. He was an amazing horse and taught me so much more than I ever thought I could learn. He was my heart horse. He tried his heart out for me. He won me my first queen title, was the first horse I was able to be competitive on in gaming and taught me the sport of reining. I never thought I would have a horse that would be able to not only place me 1st in pole bending at youth rodeo but we placed first overall at the end of the season. I wish it wouldn’t have happened so soon but I just have to keep reminding myself everything happens for a reason. Tommy will forever be missed and he will always have a special place in my heart.

The Oregon Queen — January/February 2021 SPONSOR EDITION

President’s Message!

Happy New Year! Let us hope that 2021 is going to be a much more positive year than 2020.

I know that our titleholders are waiting for a year filled with rodeos, community activities and sharing time with their “Sash Sisters”. The sponsors for our titleholders and our organization have supported us through the complications of 2020. We will continue to share their services and products throughout our activities and appearances in 2021.  We are focusing on their businesses in this first edition of 2021 and I hope you will support them!!

We have a fantastic Miss Rodeo Oregon Queen Clinic scheduled April 2 through April 4, 2021 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Madras, OR. We are working very hard to follow all requirements for Covid 19 to insure the safety for all participants. The food will be better than ever and we will have a special service on Easter morning. Please refer to our postings to see our list of very qualified clinicians and planned educational activities.

We have posted about both pageants this year so check this website for all the details, including applications.  Remember, nothing can be turned in until March 1 but you will be able to determine the requirements should you want to apply!

2020 did not leave without taking some very special people with it. On December 2, we lost Dr. Wally Zimmerman, husband of our secretary Carol. He had just been appointed as the chairman of the Bylaws committee and had been an active member of MROIF for many years. On December 24, we lost Tom Kasch to a motor vehicle accident. He and his wife Marilyn have supplied cattle for our Queen’s Clinic for the past few years. Both of those men are sorely missed.

Again, I want to say let’s make 2021 a very positive year and all come together to support our titleholders as they go forward.

Respectfully submitted,

Julie Singer, President MROIF

Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Samantha Henricks!

In an ordinary year, I would have officially passed the crown to the next fortunate lady and my time wearing the Miss Rodeo Oregon crown would have already came to an end. But, as we know, this is not an “normal” year and I have the great opportunity to continue my year. We all know it takes a crew to get a rodeo queen down the road for a single year, but two years is a feat all its own! I could not have gotten to the place I am now without friends, family and–of course– my sponsors!

The first sponsors I would like to highlight are Kendon Leet Real Estate, Wayne and Shirley Sheffel, Toolin Turquoise and Kelly’s Automotive. These individuals helped me get to the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant–from buying large amounts of raffle tickets to buying ads, or just simply sponsoring me in hopes I would be able to clinch the title. Thank you! You were a large part in getting the ball rolling for me and starting my Miss Rodeo Oregon journey.

We all know a signature part of a rodeo queen’s wardrobe is her chaps! Kaylah and Aaron Gilkey at Rockstar Custom Leather have been my go to for leather works since I held my first title. They were generous enough to work with me on my custom chaps this year. They are wonderful to work with and Aaron has a great ability to transform what is in your head to paper and, eventually, leather! I could not be happier with the results and will be going back for more signature pieces from here on out.

I also cannot forget to recognize rodeos that joined my team in 2020: St. Paul Rodeo and Sisters Rodeo! To have rodeos within the state provide me with funds to get down the road is really the most rewarding sponsorship I have received. My job is to promote these rodeos and committees and for me to see that they appreciate that and want to help, just goes to show what kind of people we have on the St. Paul and Sisters Rodeo boards. I will see you both in 2021!

Just like my chaps, an iconic piece of my wardrobe is boots and, of course, a cowboy hat. Thanks to Dan Post and Greeley, I have both! I was fortunate enough to get three pairs of Dan Post Boots to wear throughout my year and I can not wait to show them off this year! Also, my favorite maroon Greeley hat was graciously sponsored and pairs great with any outfit I throw together. You will not catch me without it going down the road.

As I move into 2021, I have yet to have a coronation auction and dinner. Therefore, I have set out to host smaller fundraisers like the Miss Rodeo Oregon Poker Ride last year. Brushriders, a local equestrian club, jumped on board and sponsored this event to make it happen on very short notice and for that I am grateful!  I had so many people from my community come out to the Poker Ride and support me. It is truly humbling to have the support of your community, especially in times like these.

On February 27th, 2021 I plan to stay with the trend of smaller fundraisers and am set to host the 2021 Miss Rodeo Oregon Gymkhana! There have been many people who have helped piece this event together. To Missy and Dave Hobbs of Golden West Electric, thank you so much for sponsoring my Gymkhana day and for the continued support over the years from 4H to local queen titles and Equestrian Team! To Brushriders, thank you for joining me once again and sponsoring this event; without your generosity this event would not be possible. To the Jungling Family from Tillamook, Oregon and our very own Lois Forester, you have been huge assets in making this event possible and I appreciate it more than you know! And, to my friends and family who will be there to work the event, thank you in advance!

I know I am forgetting people.. But, please know that your actions do not go unnoticed. From lending me a horse, providing a meal, or putting a roof over my head while I am away from home, I genuinely appreciate it all. Just like rodeos need sponsors and fans to make their events a success, a rodeo queen needs the same!

As I move into 2021 for my second “term”, as I like to call it, I will not forget who got me to where I am today and can not wait for what is to come! So, once again, thank you friends, family and–of course–sponsors!!

2021 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Ainsley Goughnour!

With the new year came new hopes and lots of anticipation. Ending 2020 gave me so much excitement for what 2021 will hold. Though last year was most definitely not what I had expected, I’m blessed by the experiences that I had and will cherish all of the memories.

I ended the year with a couple Christmas parades and I must say it was such a treat to be out in the streets in celebration with so many people. I took part in the Scappoose Christmas parade that Miss NPRA Nicole Rice invited JMRO Morgan and me to participate in. Let me just say it was a long, cold parade but oh so much fun. It’s always a blast to be able to hang out with Morgan at events. The following weekend I stayed closer to home where I took part in the Donald Christmas parade. The weather was kind to me and stayed dry until the last block of the parade where the skies opened up and began dumping buckets just as we got in the truck to head home. Christmas and New Years brought about a new spark of hope for so many, including me. I’ve been busy putting together my 2021 schedule and cannot wait to get on the rodeo road!

Unfortunately, right off the bat, I was hit a huge blow. I unexpectedly lost my partner, Pete (who I’ve written and posted about all year long). It’s expected that he had an aneurysm. The loss of my boy Pete has been devastating as we had so many things planned for the future together.  I’m blessed by the years we had and will always hold him close to my heart and I know he’ll be with Leo and me as we blaze this new adventure without him.

February will start with my first rodeo of the year. I can’t wait to kick off the season at the Mt. Hood Rough Stock Challenge. Sam, Morgan and I will be there greeting fans and signing autographs. Stay tuned next month to see how it goes.

With the new year well underway, I am full of hope and excitement of what this year has in store.  I am so thankful that I get to represent the best sport on dirt and my great state another year in 2021.

My boy, Pete.

Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon 2021 Morgan Brownell!

Back in December, I had a Christmas parade in Scappoose with Ainsley. We were able to decorate a trailer with our banners, serapes and Christmas lights. Although it was cold and long, it was so much fun to see people and the smiles on their faces. Everyone was so happy to be able to see all the rodeo queens. It was so much fun to have another parade and get out!!

I look forward to seeing what 2021 will bring and am excited for this opportunity to continue my title for a 2nd year.

And now I’d like to introduce you to my sponsors!

We owe such a debt of gratitude to our sponsors, some of whom have been with our organization for many years.  We encourage everyone to support their businesses!!

Bob Roy has been involved in the rodeo industry for 50 years, competing in Jr., High school, college, amateur and professional rodeos from Florida to Calgary, Canada. (He won his first all-around cowboy saddle at the age of 11).

Bob currently lives in The Dalles, Oregon where he has a thriving custom saddle making business. In the last 38 years he has built saddles for everyone from everyday horse people to world champions. Not only has he built custom saddles for people in the U.S. but also Canada, Germany, France, Korea, New Zealand and Australia.

After his competitive days were over, he has kept involved by judging rodeos in Oregon, Washington, and New Zealand. He has also served on the board of directors for the Northwest Rodeo Association and Miss Rodeo Oregon, Inc. Foundation.  Since 2000, Bob Roy has provided all the saddles for Miss Rodeo Oregon and, since 2004, Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon and Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon.

A Clackamas tradition since 1958, the Canby Rodeo began in Clackamas after Canby resident Craig Landeen and the fair board created the event as an attraction to boost attendance to the Fair.  The Canby Rodeo has partnered with Miss Rodeo Oregon, Inc. Foundation since 2011 and we are extremely grateful for their sponsorship.  Pictured below are the Canby Rodeo Directors.

The Clackamas County Fair and Event Center has been the home of the Clackamas County Fair since 1907.  They strive to not only provide family-friendly entertainment, but also to be a family-friendly facility year round. For the convenience of the grounds users, 65 RV spaces with full hook ups were installed in an RV park. Major events happen every month of the year, from RV shows, travel groups, the College of Culture, Gem and Mineral Shows, horse shows, other horse events and rodeos, with the county fair being the largest event held the last week in July.

The Tillamook County Rodeo Association, Inc. was founded in 1986 with the idea of providing an additional entertainment event to the area.  It acts as an economic draw and enhancement for Tillamook County.  It also provides the home for the Junior/Teen/Sweetheart Pageant–the spacious Tillaskate building for indoor events (with a fully-equipped kitchen) and the arena for Horsemanship.  Debbie Tupper is their rodeo queen coordinator!

The first rodeo was held in June 1987 and continues to occur the fourth weekend in June of every year.  The Tillamook County Rodeo Association is incorporated as a non-profit corporation, with its major objective to assist the youth of Tillamook County by offering grants upon request.

Our Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant has been continuously held at a Best Western Hotel since 2011 and now is held at the Wilsonville Best Western Inn & Suites.  They provide the large conference room for the entire pageant stay which makes it easy to host individual events and display the array of MRO awards.  Their rooms are spacious and clean and a free hot breakfast is provided.  We look forward to returning in 2021!

They stock their shelves with quality western and work gear with more than 8,000 styles of boots, jeans, shirts, hats, belts, jewelry and more.  They have all the latest styles from Wrangler, Ariat, Justin, Carhartt, Dan Post, Resistol to Montana Silversmith and many, many more.  Boot Barn partners with us on the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant Fashion Show and they offer MRO members a 15% at their stores in Oregon!

The Oregon Queen — November 2020

Samantha Henricks, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2020-21!

One thing that this year has brought is not one, but two Circuit Finals for the Columbia River Circuit. Last month I traveled across the state to Hermiston, Oregon for the Columbia River Circuit Finals! I was joined by Kelsy, Miss Rodeo Alaska, and Madi, Miss Rodeo Washington. In a normal year, circuit finalists would travel to Yakima, Washington the second weekend in January to compete in the Yakima Sundome. If you remember, I already got the opportunity to travel there this January! With the COVID19 outbreak, the Columbia River Committee decided to bump the finals sooner and hold them in Oregon in case restrictions prohibited them from having the event in Washington in January. I am not sure if I have a curse, or if I simply just get lucky, but I have a knack for riding horses that aspire to be bronc horses. The borrowed horse I rode gave me quite a ride at the Friday performance! What can I say, I am just trying to keep everyone on their toes! Luckily, Lauren Makin, 2020 Pendleton Round-up Princess, graciously offered me her horse to present the American Flag on Saturday. I am sure proud of the Farm City Pro Rodeo Committee, the Columbia River Circuit Board and all the many volunteers and contract personnel who came together to put on a Finals for our contestants. Also, very proud to have a Finals on Oregon dirt!
I was also able to attend the Canby Mock Tryout last month. Ainsley, Morgan and I had a great time and were accompanied by many members of the Miss Rodeo Oregon Board. I was able to watch horsemanship, speech, and sit in on interviews. I really wish there were more of these events for young women to “practice” and gain skills to use towards their next pageant! The Canby Court Advisors did a great job hosting the contestants and all the contestants did a great job!
Both Morgan and Ainsley got an early surprise while at the mock pageant…. their Bob Roy Saddles!!! The Miss Rodeo Oregon Board kept a pretty good secret, and I can vouch that neither Ainsley or Morgan knew what they were up to! Lynn also surprised me with a beautiful framed picture of me carrying the American flag at the Cascade Chute Out!
As we move towards the end of the year, I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday season. Be sure to check the social media pages regularly to see what the three of us with be up to in the coming months!

Ainsley Goughnour, Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2020-21!

Yet again, another month has flown by! It’s crazy to think that in a normal year we would be going to Sam’s send off party for Miss Rodeo America Pageant and in two short months I would hand off my crown and my reign would be over.

October has been a slower month but has been nothing less than amazing. This month, one of my awesome sponsors, Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo, put on a mock tryout so girls could go through a practice pageant and get feedback to help them with future pageants. They kicked off the morning with Horsemanship, where the girls had to ride a horsemanship pattern, make a queen run and flag run on their horse and then again on a draw horse. They also did horsemanship interviews.  Of course, while all this was going on we snuck in some pictures with Sam, Morgan and members of the MRO Board. After horsemanship and a lunch break, we headed inside to warm up while the girls took part in personal interviews. Then the contestants all gave a speech and answered three impromptu questions.

Meanwhile, as they tabulated scores from the pageant, the Miss Rodeo Oregon Inc. Foundation had a little surprise up their sleeves. (More on that in a moment.) Once scores were tabulated, they announced who would have been on the court had it been a real pageant. I’m so proud of each of the contestants for putting themselves out there to be judged as well as being willing to learn and gain experience for their future.

Now about that surprise…..!   While waiting for the results of the mock tryout, the board called Morgan and me up front and in came our custom made Bob Roy saddles. To say I was surprised was an understatement. Every year, Bob Roy makes beautiful saddles for all three of the MROIF girls. Bob sponsors half of the Teen and Jr. saddles and the other  half we raise at our coronations. I can’t wait to use my saddle during my reign and beyond. It is a piece that I will cherish for years to come. When they brought out the saddle, I was shocked and ecstatic to actually have it in front of me. Thank you to the MRO board for this amazing surprise and Bob Roy for making this possible.

Though it wasn’t the most eventful month, it was one that will bring a smile to my face every time I think about it. I hope you are able to find joy in this season as we get ready for Thanksgiving.  We have so much to be thankful for.
Cheerfully,
Ainsley

Morgan Brownell, Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon 2020-21!

This month I was able to go to the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo Court mock tryout along with Sam and Ainsley. Ainsley and I worked the gate during horsemanship. We also had a mini photoshoot in the cute Halloween decorations that they had set up while we waited for speeches to start.

After speeches and while we were waiting for the girls to be brought back in, Ainsley and I were surprised with our one-of-a-kind Bob Roy Saddles. We were so surprised and super happy. I have had a few rides in mine and it is amazing!! I have ridden all four of my horses in it and it fits them all so nicely. We don’t leave it at the barn so it sits in our house on “display” in front of my mom’s St. Paul Rodeo picture from when she was princess and a couple different pictures we have that was given to us from 2012 JMRO Ashley Ferch and MTRO Kayla Vincent.

At the beginning of this month, I had a playday with Tommy and we got High Point for the day! I was so proud with how we did. There were a lot of people there but it seemed to go by fast. I made a mistake that I will NEVER do again and forgot to tighten my cinch before poles and as I was running down, I realized my cinch was sliding to the side. I was able to adjust it but I kept running, just a little slower. We still got 1st in poles but it wasn’t our best time. We got a cute halter that I actually was needing for Chester so now he wears it!

Gratefully, 2020/21 JMRO Morgan

Meet Carol Zimmerman, Board Secretary!

I was ranch raised in the small rural area of Scio, Oregon, and have had a horse as far back as I can remember. My family had a dairy until I was in middle school when we converted our operation to commercial beef cattle, sheep and angora goats.

In those early dairy days, my dad would tie a horse up outside the dairy barn and I rode a million imaginary miles without him needing to leave his job to help me. As a youth, I completed ten years in the 4-H program having projects in horse, sheep and sewing. I was a 4-H Horse project member when the horse program first began in Oregon. I competed at the Oregon State Fair with my horse project in Showmanship and Horsemanship, and was on the State Champion Horse Judging Team.  I also rode English at Oregon State University.

Before the days of shiny crowns and engraved trophy buckles, I served as a princess on the Junior and Senior Rodeo courts in Lebanon, Oregon as well as serving as Oregon Mounted Posse Queen where I received an outfit and a filigree belt buckle. Though the rodeos were great in those days, the queen world and wardrobes were very different from today.

Two sons and two daughters call me Mom, all of whom ride and rope and have children involved in 4-H and some in Pee Wee Rodeo. My husband Wally, also an MRO member, and I currently live in the Tumalo area outside of Bend where we have seven horses and raise and sell hay.

I am a past 4-H leader, having been a leader for horse, beef and swine clubs. I’m a retired elementary school teacher with over 30 years as a teacher, and have chaperoned youth delegations to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, as well as youth delegations to Washington D.C. The travel bug bit early in my working years and I’ve been fortunate to travel throughout the western United States, our neighbors to the north and south Canada and Mexico, as well as Europe, Russia, and more recently, Iceland.

I have competed in the show pen, and have ridden on drill teams, as well as doing back country pack trips. On one of my most memorable trips Wally, my son, and I were five nights in the back country of the Carson Iceberg Wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Currently I am a ten plus year student of the Vaquero California style Bridle Horse Project to create working cow horses and participate in working cattle in the spring and fall.

I am a member of Miss Rodeo Oregon, Inc. Foundation serving as Secretary for the past six years, and have helped with the Jr/Teen and Miss pageants, as well as  serving on the Education and Programs committee. As a Miss Rodeo America member, I have attended several Miss Rodeo America contests as well as coronations. I have served as a judge’s chaperone for the Miss NPRA contests sitting in on the personal and horsemanship interviews as the time keeper. Local pageants have invited me to serve as a judge for their queen contest pageants. Currently I am serving as
the Deschutes County Fair and Rodeo Queen advisor. I enjoy helping young women prepare and achieve their goals as they represent the sport of Rodeo and the Western Way of Life.
